Forum Acousticum 2025, Málaga
In a previous post, I shared slides and YouTube clips of our team’s three paper presentations. here, I will share some photos, impressions from a soundwalk, and thoughts.

The Euronoise Conference is very large, with ~1500 participants, ~1100 papers and an industry exhibition by companies all over the world working in acoustic engineering.
The Euronoise – Forum Acousticum website is here: https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/

let’s dive into it! With so many parallel sessions (around 10, all the time), i could only capture 5-10% of what was going on. Two excellent papers from the first session that I chose to attend:
- Wunderli et al, “ATTRACTIVENESS OF URBAN GREEN SPACES”, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41743695809.pdf
- Haselhoff, linking near-urban green spaces with population health https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41743671868.pdf
- Watts, “TRANQUILLITY ISLANDS”, paper on green/blue city spaces that may provide more or less restorativeness, a metric of interest, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41743330572.pdf
- Dekoninck, recommendations for how to operationalise citizen science, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41744037028.pdf

Then followed by
- Engel, who is the guest editor for our recent MDPI Sustainability article on Wong Tai Sin, presented a study compares two parks in Curitiba, Brazil over time, https://revolution.helice.app/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41749916386.pdf
- Joen, has previously investigated the acoutics of Korean temples [gooscholar]
- van Kempen, meta-review of health/soundscape studies, of methodological interest and for policy, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41743694124.pdf
- Clark, similar work on health & policy, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41743779206.pdf
Mark Plumbley’s keynote on AI for acoustics was a highlight (i took photos of almost every slide, will share upon request)

I joined a soundwalk (Daumal method) in the historical centre of Málaga. Francesc Daumal was there himself to lead and animate. I teamed up with two postgrad students and we set out to listen and smell the environment… it was slightly chaotic and rather terrifying to be blindfolded and led across bumpy footpaths near roaring traffic, but also fun, and inspiring for work that we are planning to do with MMHK in phase two.

Our MMHK Co-I Francesco Aletta gave a keynote that was absolutely en point.
After lunch, another good session, this time on indoor soundscapes:
- Boukhemia, design intervention to improve indoor acoustics (some relations to my own restaurant soundscape studies), https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41744039266.pdf
- Hong, about perceptual responses to birdsongs, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41744005396.pdf
- Mascolo, important method (IDW, inverse distance weighted interpolation) and inspiring way to do citizen science as a “noiseCapture party”, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41743755312.pdf

- André Fiebig’s team at BerlinTUB presented a technically very solid paper, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41744027997.pdf
- Torresin and team preparing for us very relevant research on soundscape with FLOOP, a complex systems approach, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41743521277.pdf

- Lundgård, about awe and ‘sonic citizenship’, https://revolution.servicioapps.com/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41747147055.pdf

- Our UCL friend Fang Xiang is modelling a visionary acoustic intervention, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41744302108.pdf
- Several-times collaborator Elif Özcan, on critical alarms, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41744052466.pdf and on hospital soundscape, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41743777317.pdf

- Lee, related work on hospital soundscape, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41743976209.pdf
- Versümer, on salient sounds in everyday indoor soundscapes, relevant to our SleepSound approach, https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41744061836.pdf
- Thomas Deacon, a solid and animated presentation on design research with diary experience sampling (of interest for Valentina and Haowen!), https://www.fa-euronoise2025.org/uploads/app/1967/formsuploads/fileblock41743169267.pdf

Forum Acousticum | Euronoise 2025 came to an end with a reception after the last keynote and closing remarks. It’s been an intense four days. Much research to digest… Here’s PerMagnus signing off…

…. but the conferencing wasn’t over! later that evening I took the night bus from Málaga to Lisbon, to attend the ICAD conference in Coimbra starting a few days later. More about that in the next post!
Aha I found some more photos on my phone, here at the end of this post let’s share some social selfies with colleagues and new friends!
